S.T.A.R. Reach Clubhouse believes that each member has a contribution to make, regardless of his or her level of disability; therefore, we rely on our members' talents, skills and abilities in order to function. One of the key principles of this philosophy is the importance of "meaningful work."
S.T.A.R. Reach is organized into a work unit responsible for the daily operation of the Clubhouse. For many new members, this presents a first opportunity to ease into the world of work and social interaction. Working in the unit allows members not only to develop job skills, but to perform real work that is valued by the S.T.A.R. Reach community -
things like... newsletter development and distribution, answering phones, orienting new members, greeting visitors, and community outreach. Members also learn to operate a wide range of office equipment including fax machines, photocopiers, postage meters, and most importantly, computers.
Members can also become involved with food services. Staff and members prepare lunch, which may be purchased for $1.50. Members who cook choose the meal they would like to prepare and assist with weekly food shopping. Skill building is further developed by participation in the member-run snack shop.
By participating in a work-ordered day, members regain a sense of self worth and often find, for the first time in a long time, that they are wanted, needed and valued.
